The Mahrez Algeria lineup decision became a central tactical talking point ahead of Algeria’s FIFA World Cup 2026 Group J fixture against Jordan at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium on Monday, with head coach making key changes aimed at stabilising their campaign.
Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez was the only change to the starting XI, as the player had come off the bench in the first match of the tournament, a 3-0 loss to Argentina. Mahrez took over from Aissa Mandi as skipper in a leadership change, as well as a change in leadership in terms of on-field management after a shaky start to the group stage.
Algeria also brought on a new midfielder in the form of Ramiz Zerrouki as part of two changes which were aimed at improving control in midfield. The changes come in an effort to rectify faults that were exposed in their first defeat, with Argentina exploiting defensive transitions and gaps in the midfield.
However, Jordan came into the match full of continuity in attacking roles despite being eliminated. Head coach Jamal Sellami placed his trust in forwards Ali Olwan and Mousa Al-Tamari – two integral parts of Jordan’s attacking system. Jordan was led by Olwan, who had scored his first-ever World Cup goal against Austria, in the attack.
Jordan had Hossam Abu Al-Dahab in defence as Mahmoud Al Mardi came on as a surprise in attack to give some variety in the final third. The modifications were made to create a forward and a defense that was not too easy to beat in a game that had to be won.
In Algeria, they got under pressure following their 3-0 defeat to Argentina with Lionel Messi’s hat trick revealing problems at the top level. The change in line-up was then a very tactical move and was all about experience, ball control and leadership.
