Uruguay World Cup 2026 draws Bielsa

Marcelo Bielsa, the head coach, has sounded frustrated after the Uruguayan team fanned out to a draw in two games he felt they should have won in their bid for the World Cup 2026.

La Celeste, who are two-time world champions, started the tournament with a draw against Saudi Arabia in Miami and then went back to the same location for a draw against debutants Cape Verde. Uruguay remains undefeated, but early concerns have arisen in the group stage as they have failed to capitalise on control.

Bielsa, who is renowned for his well-organised approach to football, was not afraid to show his frustration in the second game. He said Uruguay “should have won” both matches, highlighting that the squad was strong enough to earn the points “forwards despite the lack of defensive control”.

Against Cape Verde, Uruguay would give away two goals, one of which was a long-range free kick that beat the defence by splitting them and a second from an organisational failure that the back dropped. When they were at their most aggressive these moments kicked in and turned things around from La Celeste, but throughout the match they were attacking the whole time.

The Argentine coach admitted he had structural problems, saying that the organizational mistakes “are the result of leadership at the managerial level.” In his words, he has a responsibility system for his teams’ performance, especially in tournaments.

As far as competition goes, Uruguay’s early performances have landed them in a fierce group race and any points they drop may have serious implications for their knockout prospects. There are no concerns regarding offensive output, but a need to immediately adjust an area of defensive coordination has become a major concern.
