Fifa World Cup: Hong Myung-bo Backs Players After Loss

South Korea vs Mexico coach reaction emerged after head coach Hong Myung-bo told his team to stay confident after suffering an eventual 1-0 loss to Mexico in their World Cup group stage match against them.

In the second half, Kim Seung-gyu’s goalkeeping error let Mexico in for the only goal of the game. It was a highly contested situation in the air, the keeper losing possession of a high ball, from which Luis Romo finished.

However, Hong Myung-bo made it clear that his side shouldn’t be judged on one error. The objective was “regrettable,” but the execution of the game was “tactically as planned,” he said. In the early stages, South Korea had been aiming to take pressure from Mexico early on, while building a defensive structure.

The first goal was to not allow the game to go into the scoring zone when it first started, especially in the first 20 minutes, according to Hong. He said his players managed to reach a level of control and then gradually up their game management and pressing as the game went on.

The coach also said he didn’t fault any individual for the deciding mistake because physical problems in the penalty area were involved in the breakdown, adding he has not thoroughly examined the incident in detail yet.

South Korea are still in the Group A race with three points, after two results. Currently Mexico have the six points, followed by two points each for Czech Republic and South Africa, both of whom are mathematically level in the group. Now South Korea focus on a key test with South Africa in Monterrey, a positive outcome of which would put them in the round of 32.
