Mohamed Salah scored and assisted Trent Alexander-Arnold’s equalizer as Liverpool drew 2-2 at Aston Villa during his outstanding season. The Egyptian scored 39 goals in 26 Premier League games, 24 of them goals and 15 assists, in his final season with Liverpool.
He started the scoring in the first half and set up Alexander-Arnold’s second-half equalizer after Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins scored for Villa. Darwin Nunez’s likely miss of the season prevented Arne Slot’s team from increasing their lead to 10 points at the top after a game moved up from March due to the Carabao Cup final.
Villa proved they can compete with the best, but their inconsistency makes them unlikely to qualify for the Champions League again. Liverpool had chances to lead in the first 10 minutes when Virgil van Dijk shot over following Alexander-Arnold’s pass and Tyrone Mings blocked Diogo Jota’s effort.
Marcus Rashford, making his first Premier League appearance since 1 December, thought he had set up an opener in the 17th minute when he played a one-two with Marco Asensio and Andy Robertson turned the cross into his own net from inside the six-yard box, but Rashford was offside.
Salah missed a header in the 26th minute, but he scored three minutes later as Liverpool took the lead.
From suicidal Villa defense, right-back Andres Garcia passed straight to Jota, who closed in on goal and gave Salah a six-yard tap-in.
