Khadija Shaw Returns Strong, Scores in City’s FA Cup Win

After she missed their midweek League Cup semi-final against Arsenal to safeguard her mental health following racist and misogynistic abuse received online, Khadija Shaw returned to action for Manchester City, scoring their third goal in a 3-1 victory against Leicester.

Following City’s 4-3 loss to Arsenal in the Women’s Super League last weekend, City issued a statement on Tuesday denouncing the abuse of their record goalscorer stating it was under investigation. Confirmed on Thursday night was Shaw’s withdrawal from the team for the League Cup game against Arsenal.

Shaw entered the second half with City 2-0 up thanks to goals from Leila Ouahabi and the new signing Kerolin. Shaw was on the bench for the FA Cup fifth-round game at the Joie Stadium. Shaw then added City’s third 13 minutes following arrival before Nelly Las pulled one back.

“I believe that will inspire her greatly,” City Manager Gareth Taylor told the BBC. “She’s coming out of a team in a time when you don’t really want that to happen, particularly when she’s coming back from injury as well.”

Chelsea came from behind Everton elsewhere to guarantee a quarter-final spot with a 4-1 triumph. Before Mayra Ramírez, Maika Hamano, and a Sandy Baltimore penalty completed the score, Catarina Macario’s penalty canceled out Sara Holmgaard’s opener.

Third-tier Rugby Borough made Liverpool sweat. Mia Enderby added a second in added time and Marie Höbinger opened the 84th minute score.

Similarly tested were Crystal Palace, goals from Ashleigh Weerden and Abbie Larkin with less than 10 minutes left resulted in a 2-0 victory against Newcastle.
