Elliott’s Late Strike Seals Liverpool’s Dramatic Win Over PSG

After going on to give a lucky 1-0 victory against Paris St Germain, who outplayed their opponents during Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg match, Liverpool substitute Harvey Elliott scored a last-gasp winner 47 seconds after arriving on.

After a layoff from fellow replacement Darwin Nunez for a hardly-earned triumph in Paris, Elliott sloted home in the 87th minute against the flow of play following a string of superb stops by keeper Alisson keeping Liverpool in the game. Compared to PSG’s 28, Liverpool aimed for their first shot on target and second effort.

Having won 18 and drawn two of their last 20 games, Luis Enrique’s PSG was left to regret lost opportunities while considering a difficult return leg at Anfield next Tuesday.

Champions League

The Champions League last eight will see the aggregate victor facing either Aston Villa or Club Brugge. PSG started strongly with Liverpool’s effort at a high press not lasting very long.

The hosts had the first clear chance in the 16th minute when Joao Neves blasted his attempt over the bar following Dembele’s cutback after the France attacker had beaten two defenders.

Alarm bells were sounding for Liverpool, and once more, they avoided punishment in the 20th when a VAR review ruled down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s outstanding curving attempt as offside.

Following a challenge from Ibrahima Konate, Bradley Barcola went down and another video check for a possible red card was called for, but the visitors stayed with eleven men.

Alisson parived Neves’ 25-metre strike before denying Dembele while Liverpool was in survival mode. The ball passed Barcola’s path, whose initial strike was blocked before his second flew over.

Early in a one-sided second half, the Brazilian keeper’s strong hand was there once more to stop Kvaratskhelia and made stops left, right, and centre. “Without him, I’m not sure where we would be,” striker Elliott said.

Hoping to change the tide, Slot threw Curtis Jones and Nunez on for Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota; PSG stayed one level higher.

Once more, Alisson extended to tip away Desire Doue’s missile ten minutes from time and was instrumental in the goal’s building up.

Nunez displayed his might to win Alisson’s long ball and played it into Elliott’s path, who coolly put the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma, as the clock ran down.

Named man of the match, Alisson stated his performance reflected his life’s work. “We have to be ready for suffering… For us, tonight was difficult with a pleasant ending,” he remarked.
