Ecuador Football Mourns Mario Pineida

The football of Ecuador is mourning after the tragic death in an attack in the city of Guayaquil in the North of Ecuador of an international defender of Ecuador named Mario Pineida who was shot dead. On Wednesday, Barcelona Sporting Club had to admit the tragedy and explained that the club received official information about the death of a player.

Pineida, 33 was allegedly assaulted outside a local shop but Ecuadorian police did not give any additional information since the inquiries are still in progress. The officials have affirmed that an investigation has been initiated to establish the nature of the incident.

Barcelo Sporting Club was very sorrowful as it gave an emotional statement posted throughout its official channels. The club said that the defeat was heartbreaking because the death of Pineida has shocked players, staff, and supporters. The club also stated that information on the memorial services would be availed later, but it wanted the fans to pray and support the family of the footballer in this trying moment.

Pineida started his career with Independiente del Valle where he matured as a productive full-back during the years between 2010 and 2015. His good performances made him get a transfer to a foreign country and one of his significant transfers was to Brazilian club Fluminense. He would later get back to Ecuadorian football and become a recognised personality in the local league.

Pineida won nine caps with Ecuador between 2015 and 2021 on the international level. He played in the world cup qualification in 2018 and 2022 with the national team bringing his expertise and defensive stability to the key games.

Teammates, clubs, and fans have been making tributes to Pineida across Ecuador with some praising him on his professionalism, humility and his commitment and service to the sport. His death will be a great loss to not only Barcelona SC but also to the entire Ecuadorian football where he will live on in his own legacy on and off the field.
