Uefa Investigates ‘Gibraltar is Spanish’ Chant by Spain Players

The Spanish national squad was disciplined by Uefa for celebrating Euro 2024 with celebratory music. Alvaro Morata and Rodri shouted “Gibraltar is Spanish,” provoking a GFA protest.

Spain’s 2-1 win over England in the 2024 Euro final on July 15 sparked a tremendous celebration in Cibeles Square. AC Milan striker Morata inspired other players to join Rodri’s chorus. Gibraltar, long claimed by Spain, has been a British possession since the 18th century. This makes the song controversial.

The GFA called the Spanish players’ behavior “extremely provocative and insulting,” saying it has no place in sports. A official report to Uefa led the regulatory body to hire a disciplinary inspector. Uefa said the inspector will investigate “a potential violation of the Uefa regulations on discipline.”

Gibraltar’s sovereignty has been disputed for centuries despite its placement on Spain’s southern border and British rule. Gibraltar can now attend foreign football matches since joining Uefa in 2013.

Football parties may exacerbate geographical and historical concerns, study suggests. The UEFA study may inspire similar events. Soccer enthusiasts are waiting for Uefa to reveal the results and explain Spanish players’ fates.
