The idea of Iran 2026 world cup debate was aggravated by the remarks by the former US President Donald Trump who wrote about the possible involvement of the Iranian national football team at the tournament.
On Thursday, Trump said that Iran would technically be welcome to play in the FIFA world cup in 2026, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Nonetheless, he further indicated that the team could be safer not to attend as there were security issues that remained to be.
The statements were published on Trump on his social media platform Truth Social. His remarks occurred when there were extra geopolitical tensions after recent airstrikes by the US and Israel upon sites in Iran.
Trump stated that the US would not officially prevent Iran to participate in the tournament. However, he cautioned about sensitivity of the environment since the present political atmosphere was volatile.
The social media promptly reacted through the Iran national football team. The team also clarified that the governing body of participation in the world cup was FIFA rules and not by decisions of individual governments.
It further pointed out that Iran had qualified to the 2026 tournament based on its performance on the pitch. Officials further pointed out that the world cup is a global sporting event whereby teams play on basis of merit and FIFA protocols.
Iran also added that it is the prerogative of no nation to disqualify a team with qualified personnel without FIFA making a formal ruling.
The problem has been debated by the fans and analysts of football. A lot of people hold the view that politics must not be involved in the international sport, particularly in international tourism like the world cup.
