Despite the one-hour delay due to bad weather before the match, there was clear improvement in their England World Cup warm-up game against Costa Rica as they produced a 3-0 victory.
The show was much more convincing than their close victory over New Zealand. The team were sharper, quicker and more co-ordinated all round the field. This is important because England’s next game on the World Cup schedule is against Croatia on 17 June in Dallas.
Declan Rice was the first to score early. He was deflected after some good attacking play from Anthony Gordon. Gordon was the show-stopper throughout the game. Barcelona winger was constantly able to put pressure on the Costa Rican defense from the wings. He also had a hard-fought style of play which brought another attacking dimension.
Jude Bellingham played as an advanced No 10. This is a very strategic maneuver. He was fluid in midfield and attack and was free in the press box. He made one good through ball to Noni Madueke into a good scoring position.
Tactically, it was England that was more structured. Midfield dominated the tempo, the attack were more intent and active. This is a positive turn of events, days before getting stiffer opposition.
The result is significant but the performance is valuable. It’s an indication that England are getting going at the right moment. The selection of squad players is now more challenging, particularly when it comes to attacking players.
This result should have had an impact on Tuchel’s tactics for the start of his game. The England squad is now in the tournament with a more confident and focused attacking side.
