Al Nassr Boss Explains Ronaldo’s Absence from Squad

Al Nassr was playing Esteghlal in the AFC Champions League, missing Cristiano Ronaldo. Though he never traveled to Tehran, fans expected him to spearhead the attack. The goalless stalemate during the game had many wondering why the Portuguese star was missing.

Speculation started to circulate fast. According to certain sources (via DPA news agency released by Daily Mail), Al Nassr wanted the game relocated to a neutral location because of Ronaldo’s past problems in Tehran.

Others questioned if that was a tactical choice. Al Nassr manager Stefano Pioli has now divulged the actual cause of Ronaldo’s absence, though. Pioli handled the matter while answering questions to media following the game. He explained, according to GOAL, “He had a physical problem, but I wouldn’t say it was 100% a big problem, but we preferred him not to be in the game.”

Pioli did not delve deeper, but his comment implies Ronaldo lacked complete fitness to participate. Al Nassr lack potency without their star forward. Although the Saudi team produced some opportunities, they did not locate the net. Clearly felt was the absence of Ronaldo, who this season has scored six goals in five Champions League Elite games.
