The late goal by the Frenchman was little comfort for Real Madrid, who had been a distant second throughout. With a pair of excellent stops, Thibaut Courtois kept Barcelona from winning by a larger margin. The former Chelsea goalkeeper was put to the test early on, turning Lewandowski’s sweeping effort onto the post and save Ousmane Dembele’s thunderous strike.

But, after Pedri scored his team’s third goal with a tap-in midway through the second half, there was no doubt about the outcome: Barcelona won the Super Cup for the first time since 2018. Real Madrid were simply unable to cope with Gavi’s brilliance.

He became the youngest scorer in a Spanish Super Cup, beating the record of his current mentor Xavi. Back in October, these two teams met in the first El Clasico match of the season, with Real Madrid winning 3-1.

But Barcelona have only grown stronger since then, and they now sit atop La Liga, three points ahead of Real Madrid, with this victory extending their unbeaten record in all competitions to nine games.
