Fifa World Cup match timings remain unchanged as FIFA has confirmed that Sunday’s Round of 16 fixtures will proceed as scheduled despite earlier concerns over severe weather disruptions.
International reports said that the tournament organisers had looked at contingency plans and forecasts of possible adverse weather, particularly around the high-profile match between Mexico and England. But, following a self-evaluation, FIFA decided to keep the current schedule.
Mexico face England at the Azteca Stadium starting at 6pm local time and Brazil’s match against Norway in New York will be at 4pm local time. Both games are likely to play out without a postponement should the weather deteriorate considerably nearer to kick-off.
The timing of the match between Mexico and England had also been speculated about in earlier reports by Mexican media, indicating that the conflict might be relocating the game to an earlier time in the day, as to lessen the risk. Meanwhile, the Brazilian Football Confederation had announced that it would be possible to delay the Brazil match by an hour if the other matches are changed to avoid a clash.
Nevertheless, FIFA’s decision is based on the confidence in existing weather forecasts and matchday facilities. Stability of the broadcast schedule also helps to ensure logistical coordination and stability between venues.
The impact of weather has already been noted and there are concerns about underlying risks. Prior to the match against Ecuador, Mexico had a previous match that was postponed because of the rain, and then went on to play, showing the need for some contingency planning.
The organisers are keeping a close watch on conditions as the competition heads to the winner-takes-all quarter-finals. The main concern is ensuring the safety of players, officials, and spectators and maintaining a tournament schedule.
