Will Southampton Spygate scandal change FA decision?

The Southampton Spygate scandal FA investigation has been thrown into further confusion as the Football Association has confirmed a formal investigation into the club’s actions. The decision follows Southampton’s relegation from the Championship play-offs after they confessed to breaking the rules by using illegal match spying.

The Football Association said it would now go into the matter separately and would not comment further “until all evidence is taken into consideration. This puts even more pressure on what is already a significant challenge to the season and reputation of the club.

Southampton were originally handed a place in the EFL’s ‘blacklist’ after admitting to having filmed Middlesbrough at a training session before their play-off semi-final first leg on May 7. The disciplinary commission imposed a four-point penalty on the club for the upcoming Championship and also kicked it out of the play-offs.

The controversy is far from over. It wasn’t just Southampton, as repeated offences are possible, as they were charged with spying on Oxford United earlier in December 2025 and Ipswich in April 2026. The challenge to the sanctions was thrown out and they were confirmed.

This has meant Middlesbrough – which had been disqualified from the semi-final in Southampton – have been restored and will contest a play-off final for their Premier League bid against Hull City.

Few people are happy about the Southampton camp and it is evident from within. Players like Kuryu Matsuki and Leo Scienza have all voiced their dismay over the move. According to Scienza, the club was suffering with emotional issues among its players, and the situation was “heartbreaking” for both players and supporters.

Matsuki also noted the role fans play in the club’s turnaround, from 21st place in November to top four by the end of the season.
