Why Players Are Protesting FIFA’s Schedule?

The 2024-2025 season of major European leagues, such as La Liga and the Premier League, has already been replete with injuries to players. In reaction against this, not only are players threatening to go on strike but they are also filing a formal complaint against FIFA with the European Commission. The complaint submitted by the International Federation of Professional Footballers, FIPro, with European Leagues referred issues relating to the tight international match calendar, which they said endangered player health.

With more than 70 projected matches for this season, physical demands are to a breaking point, leaving almost no space for rest and recovery. New formats in tournaments like the Club World Cup and Champions League are likely to further worsen this. For instance, this is what Champions League needs: at least eight group stage matches, while the new Club World Cup format features 32 teams in a cumbersome setup where the teams must play at least three matches.

Injuries have been reported, and several players have pointed to workload reasons for such conditions. Victims include superstars like Rodri and Marc-André ter Stegen. With players continuing to raise their concerns, this puts FIFA under immense pressure to make these scheduling issues cease.
