Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim hit out at his players after the Premier League giants suffered a humiliating Carabao Cup defeat to EFL League Two side Grimsby Town, conceding that “the best team won” on Wednesday night.
United lost 12–11 on penalties after coming back from 2–0 down to square the game at Blundell Park. Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, who were signed in the summer, missed important penalty kicks. André Onana, the goalkeeper, could only save one shot from Grimsby.
This was the first time in the history of the Carabao Cup that United lost to a fourth-tier team, and it was also the earliest they had ever been knocked out of the tournament since 2014.
Amorim was very honest in his criticism of his team, saying they didn’t fight hard enough and didn’t have the right mindset. These are problems that have already been pointed out when United got only one point from their first two Premier League games this season.
Amorim said, “We weren’t even here at the start of the game.” “We should do a lot better because everything that happens in our club is so important and affects our club.”
The coach from Portugal said sorry to the supporters and commended Grimsby for how well they played.
“I just want to say apologize to our fans. Amorim went on to say, “But I think my players showed what they really want today.” “I know now that the best team won—the only team that was really on the field.”
Even though they spent more than £200 million ($270 million) on new players over the summer, United still can’t seem to be consistent. Amorim said that it will take longer to turn the team around.
