Why Did Manchester United Visit Anfield?

On Monday, Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim, captain Bruno Fernandes, and Diogo Dalot paid respect to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva after visiting Anfield. A wreath from United’s countrymen was placed among the other tributes outside Anfield. Fernandes, Dalot, and Jota were all on the team that won the Nations League trophy in June. On July 3, 2025, Jota and his brother Silva died in an automobile crash that caught fire near Zamora, in northwestern Spain.

It was thought both were going to the UK for Liverpool’s preseason. Reports say that the deadly incident happened early in the morning when his car went off the road and caught fire. The Portuguese players on United also scribbled a note on the flowers. The flowers said, “Rest in peace, Diogo and André.”

“From everyone at Manchester United, our deepest condolences.” Liverpool has retired Jota’s shirt number 20 for all levels of the men’s and women’s teams in honour of their late player. The Reds played their first game after Jota’s death on Saturday against Preston North End, and the game was full of tributes.

Before the game started, players from both teams stood in a circle in the middle of the field and observed a minute of silence for Jota and Silva. Mohamed Salah led the team during the sombre event. Club captain Virgil van Dijk and Jota’s close friend Andrew Robertson were also in the stands for the homage, even though van Dijk wasn’t on the team for the game. There were several tributes before the game, including a minute of quiet.
