Why did Liverpool pay a record fee for Isak?

The BBC said on Monday that Liverpool had agreed to pay £125 million to get Alexander Isak from Newcastle United on a long-term contract. This is a record for a British player. Reports say that the deal could be for £130 million, plus extras.

Earlier this month, Liverpool made an offer of £110 million plus extras for the Sweden international, but the Magpies turned it down because they were looking for a striker. Newcastle sealed a deal after signing centre forward Nick Woltemade from VfB Stuttgart.

Isak is said to be getting a medical exam before the transfer deadline on Monday at 7 p.m. BST. Liverpool has already shattered the club record for a signing for £100 million, plus an extra £16 million for Germany’s Florian Wirtz.

Isak hasn’t played in any of Newcastle’s games this season yet, and he was training by himself when rumours linked him to Liverpool. He also missed Eddie Howe’s team’s trip to the Far East.

This month, the 25-year-old also put out a statement saying that Newcastle broke agreements.

“When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t go on,” he stated on Instagram stories.

“Change is good for everyone, not just me.”

Alexander Isak will be the most expensive player ever signed by a Premier League team. He will cost more than Chelsea’s Moisés Caicedo, who came from Brighton & Hove Albion for £115m in the summer of 2023.

The Sweden international, who joined Newcastle from La Liga club Real Sociedad for £60 million in 2022, scored 27 goals in 42 games in all competitions last season.
