Why did Anthony Gordon apologise after red card?

After Newcastle United lost 3-2 to Liverpool at St. James’ Park on Monday, attacker Anthony Gordon admitted he was wrong and apologised to his teammates and fans.

The home team had a big problem in the first half stoppage time when Gordon was sent off after a VAR review for a dangerous challenge on Virgil van Dijk. Newcastle came back from being down two goals and having only ten players left. Then, in the 100th minute, Liverpool’s 16-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha scored a thrilling winner, giving the reigning champions the win.

Later, Gordon went on social media to say he was sorry and explain that the foul was not on purpose.

“I really want to say I’m sorry to my teammates and the fans. I meant well. “I was just trying to get the game going and I missed the tackle,” he wrote.

He also apologised to Van Dijk in person, saying that the two talked after the game.

“I would never mean to tackle someone like this on purpose. The former Everton winger said, “We talked after, and he knows that.”

Ngumoha’s late goal not only gave Liverpool the win, but it also made him the youngest player in Premier League history to score on his debut.

The teenager demonstrated a level of calmness that was beyond his years as he calmly finished with his right foot deep into stoppage time. The outcome means that Newcastle hasn’t won any of their first matches and has only one point. They are also worried about injuries and don’t know what will happen with attacker Alexander Isak.

Eddie Howe’s team will want to get back on track when they play Leeds United on Saturday.
