In the current Premier League season, there have been 48 VAR interventions, 42 considered accurate. Also, 6 of these have been deemed incorrect. It was Gabriel Martinelli’s disallowed opener against United in September. He is supposedly being one of the errors? PL is also interested in trying out a concussion substitution program.
VAR has made six wrong calls this season, with 42 correct
This season, video assistance referees in the Premier League have gotten the call wrong six times, while the Key Match Incident panel has approved 42 of their interventions. Referee Paul Tierney consulted the pitchside monitor and ruled that Arsenal’s Brazil forward’s goal should not have counted due to a foul on Christian Eriksen committed by Martin Odegaard before the scoring.
The independent panel also found that, as part of a higher threshold approach, there were six missed VAR interventions over the first 16 match rounds (160 total matches) of all KMI events. Howard Webb has begun his work as chief refereeing officer at the PGMOL. He will meet with key staff at Premier League and English Football League clubs in the new year to decrease the number of controversial calls made by officials.
Webb oversaw the 2010 World Cup final as a referee. He is bringing a more open approach to the PGMOL. It was after the 51-year-old was lauded for the method VAR was implemented in the MLS. To mitigate the effects of concussions, the Premier League has requested permission from football’s governing bodies. It was to conduct a temporary substitute trial beginning with the 2019-2020 season.
