Van Dijk Speaks Out on Alexander-Arnold’s Future at Liverpool

Opening about teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold’s unclear future at the club, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has urged supporters and the media not to put further pressure on the right-back, who is already under great scrutiny.

The 26-year-old defender has been strongly linked to a move to Real Madrid; his contract ends this summer. Van Dijk, however, discounted any indication that Alexander-Arnold had decided about his future.

Unlike Mohamed Salah and Van Dijk personally, both of whom lately inked fresh two-year deals with the Reds, Alexander-Arnold’s future is now unknown.

With a hard-fought 1-0 triumph over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Sunday, Liverpool moved significantly towards securing the Premier League title. After a goalless first half, Alexander-Arnold netted the key goal in the 76th minute, therefore helping greatly in the triumph.

The right-back celebrated fiercely, generating conjecture about his future goals. Van Dijk, however, insists the squad is still in the dark.

“At this point, we not know as a group what’s going to happen,” Van Dijk remarked. “He’s already under a lot of pressure; so, there’s no point in putting him on the spot.”

Van Dijk said he backed Alexander-Arnold, pointing out the defender had a challenging run including an ankle injury and media and fan criticism.

“I believe we overlook the fact that we are handling a human being,” Van Dijk remarked. Over the past few months, he has experienced a lot. Everybody seems to have an opinion about him; noise has been generated. Whether or not he is personally responsible, it is a fact of life in modern times.

“He should thus get praise for stepping up in such a pivotal point when he scores a goal like that. Those are the times you should never take for granted whether he remains or goes. He greatly helped us in the title race. He deserved to celebrate; now he is back at work getting ready for the weekend.

A victory in Liverpool’s next game will mathematically guarantee the Premier League title. Still, Arne Slot’s side will grab the trophy regardless of their own outcome if second-placed Arsenal loses against Crystal Palace on Thursday.
