Van Dijk Seals 3-2 Win for Liverpool Against Atletico

Atletico Madrid and Liverpool experienced a mixed day of emotions on Wednesday when the latter won their opening match in the Champions League 3-2 after Virgil van Dijk had scored in the final moments of the game. A dramatic turnaround with the header of the Dutch captain in the 92 nd minute delighted the fans who were still cheering even after the final whistle.

The game began with a bang and the goal was scored in the fourth minute by Liverpool defender Andy Robertson when a free-kick by Mohamed Salah was redirected to him. Salah then had his own moment of genius two minutes later as he flew through three Atletiko defenders after a one two with Ryan Gravenberch to score the second.

But Atletico did not want to give up. In the 81 st minute, Marcos Llorente scored an equalizer in the form of a thunderbolt and in halftime, they had pulled one back in the 56 th minute to create a nerve- racking ending.

The intensity of the night was illustrated by Diego Simeone, the hot-tempered coach of Atletiko, who was sent off in the 90 +3 th minute after a fight with the crowd. British record signing Alexander Isak debuted with Liverpool contributing further excitement to the already exciting match.

Van Dijk rejoiced and was proud of his match-winner. “We kept pushing. We found a way again. I’m glad I got the winner. It was another European great night here, someone said, and it was a tribute to the strength of the team that has become a new Liverpool tag line.

Another late goal earned all the three points and it seems that Liverpool are just proving that they love dramatic wins, a trend that is already visible in their first run in the Premier League.
