An eighth-minute straight red card for Dayot Upamecano, for a last-man challenge, made this a tough afternoon for Bayern Munich from the very beginning, with Lars Stindl beating former teammate Yann Sommer in the 13th minute to put the home side ahead. Borussia Monchengladbach pushed for a second goal, but Bayern Munich was actually able to equalize when Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting met a perfect cross from Alphonso Davies to make it 1-1 at the end of the action-packed first half.
Although the visitors started the second half on the front foot, Borussia Monchengladbach retook the lead against the run of play when Jonas Hofmann did well and finished the goal himself. After Ramy Bensebaini rattled the woodwork, Hofmann was at the center of the action again to tee up Marcus Thuram for a 3-1 lead with just minutes to go.
