Tebas: Sporting discipline is impossible, but criminal jurisdiction is

LaLiga released a video in which president Javier Tebas refers to the ‘Negreira Case,’ following reports that Barcelona paid 1.4 million euros to the Technical Committee of Referees vice-president Enriquez Negreira. Tebas stated that LaLiga cannot impose punishment on Barcelona at this time and will only take action once the investigation into the situation is completed.

“From LaLiga we are going to respect the investigation that the Prosecutor’s Office is going to hold and, if it decides to file the appropriate complaint, we will have to appear as a private prosecutor,” Tebas said.

“It is not possible [for sanctions] to exist because five years have passed between 2018 and 2023, and this type of sanctions prescribe after three years.

“Now the Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the facts that happened and, if there is a possible crime of corruption between individuals in match-fixing and sporting terms, we will see how this investigation ends.”

Tebas insisted that he would ask the members of the Refereeing Committee of the Spanish league “whether Mr. Negreira had any interference or intervened in any designation.”

“In conclusion, these things cannot happen in Spanish football neither aesthetically nor ethically,” admitted Tebas.
