The Swiss women’s national team created history on Thursday at Stade de Genève by reaching the Women’s Euros quarterfinals for the first time.

After finishing second in Group A behind Norway, Riola Xhemaili’s 92nd-minute goal against Finland salvaged a 1-1 draw and qualified the Swiss on goal difference. After her winning goal, Xhemaili called it historic.

It’s a momentous time for Switzerland. We’re demonstrating Switzerland’s enchantment to the globe “Xhemaili. According to Swiss captain Lia Walti, the squad was pleased with the support and festivities.

“No one expected sold-out crowds in Switzerland… Walti stated everything is exploding bigger than expected.

The tournament’s maximum attendance was 26,388 at the Stade de Genève on Thursday.

The tournament will be held in eight locations and the final on July 27, and the Swiss hosts believe it will boost women’s football in the country like Euro 2022 did for England.

Since their 2017 Euros debut, Switzerland’s women’s team had never gone past the group stage. Their exceptional achievement and enormous support from local supporters marked a milestone in Swiss sports development. Switzerland will play Group B winners Spain, the world champions, in the quarterfinals.
