Spurs Beat Man United to Win Europa League

Brennan Johnson’s first-half goal gave Tottenham Hotspur a 1-0 success over Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final at San Mamés on Thursday, ending a 17-year trophy drought.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou led the team to a historic European title in his second season. Tottenham’s European success gives the North London club a renewed sense of purpose after United and Spurs finished 16th and 17th in the Premier League.

The success may not ensure Postecoglou’s career as manager, but it cements his place in the club’s history alongside Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw, who led Tottenham to European titles.

Manchester United will miss European football for the first time since 2014-15 after the loss. Spurs’ first trophy since 2008’s League Cup and first European title since 1984. The win ends a long wait and ensures a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League and an estimated £100 million in earnings. The last whistle left Postecoglou upset, remembering past failings.

“I’m still absorbing it. I realise the significance for this football team, he remarked.

“Unfortunately, waiting makes breaking the cycle harder. Club members seemed frightened. You never know how it feels until you get rid of that monkey.

We have a young group, but I hope this experience transforms their self-image.” Tottenham benched captain Son Heung-min and United manager Ruben Amorim selected Mason Mount in attack instead of Alejandro Garnacho.

Bruno Fernandes’ corner kick and Amad Diallo’s shot threatened Guglielmo Vicario early on. Pape Matar Sarr’s left-wing low cross broke the deadlock after early chances for both teams. Brennan Johnson and Luke Shaw clashed at the goal line, diverting the ball before Johnson finished it past André Onana.

United had an opportunity to equalise through Rasmus Højlund following a mistake by Vicario, but he missed the target. Amorim’s team controlled possession in the second half but struggled in the final third and couldn’t break Spurs’ defence.
