The corruption investigation by Senegal AFCON has been in the limelight following a dramatic move by the Confederation of African Football in overturning the African Cup of Nations final ruling.
The Senegalese Government has been very responsive to the ruling. Authorities have insisted on an international investigation into what they termed as suspected corruption in CAF leadership. This is the call following the loss of the title of Senegal under very controversial conditions.
Senegal had initially won extra time 1 Goal against Morocco. But the game resulted in anarchy. The senegalese players went ahead and left the pitch during stoppage time in protest of a decision that they believed was unfair. This demonstration marked the point of change.
The appeals board of CAF then declared that the Senegal match was lost. The outcome was redefined to a 3 goals to 0 defeat to Morocco. Due to this Morocco became the champions of the 2025 tournament.
The authorities of Senegalese did not restrain their response. The government in an official statement termed the ruling as grossly illegal and deeply unjust. According to them, the ruling casts grave doubts on the governance and transparency of the African football.
The scandal has left the sporting arena long ago. It has provoked political concern as well as international examination. Senegal is insisting on an independent inquiry to bring back sanity into the system.
This may be very destructive to CAF in the long run. Unless the issues are resolved, they might impact trust in the organization. At this point, the question is on whether an independent review will be carried out and what will it show.
