Salah Matches Man Utd Legend’s Record

Sunday saw Mohamed Salah become the fourth Premier League player to achieve 100 goals at the same stadium, matching Wayne Rooney’s Old Trafford record with 101 goals at Anfield.

“No matter what happens, I will never forget what scoring at Anfield feels like,” Salah remarked this season. That would be hard given how often he enjoys that adrenaline rush. Salah began his second century of Premier League goals at Liverpool’s spiritual home with a delicate penalty against Wolverhampton Wanderers this weekend. Each time the Egyptian superstar takes the pitch, a new record falls, yet few have ever scored 101 top-flight goals in front of the same adoring crowd.

After 201 Old Trafford appearances (including three for Everton), Rooney scored 101 Premier League home goals for Manchester United. Thierry Henry had unmatched success at Arsenal’s Highbury, while Sergio Aguero scored 106 top-flight goals at the Etihad Stadium.

The French legend has scored 114 Premier League goals in 125 games at Arsenal’s former home. In the club’s final match at Highbury in May 2006, Henry scored a hat-trick against Wigan Athletic to qualify for the Champions League and planted his lips on the pitch to celebrate his penalty.

Salah may not have long to demolish his old haunt. The comment about never forgetting an Anfield goal was a hint of a transfer. The record-breaking forward is nearing the end of his Liverpool contract and has a long list of suitors eager to get him on a free transfer this summer.

Salah is unlikely to match Ian Rush’s 185 goals in all competitions at Anfield, even if he stays. The 32-year-old can take comfort in surpassing famous scorers like Robbie Fowler (117), Kenny Dalglish (104) and Steven Gerrard (104).
