Rooney Responds to Owen’s Player Comparison Remarks

In reaction to the remarks of Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney said that he and I are very different players, reported the British media on Monday.

The remarks made by Owen on himself and Rooney, where he defended himself over his former England colleague, began a social media debate last week and is yet to die off following the reaction of the latter.

The reaction of Rooney has been very diplomatic with him saying we are not at all the same players.

Wazza was asked by I saw who was the best out of us at the age of 17 or 18. And I did smile,” Owen said.

The only individual that you can possibly say that I resemble in our country is Wayne Rooney. Rooney, six years younger than the former Liverpool and England striker, added that the statements of his former teammate are also fair as we both are going to defend ourselves.

“I think his comments are fair. Naturally he will be supporting himself. I’d back myself,” Rooney added.

But I would never compare myself to Michael Owen because he is a man I actually looked up to and had the privilege of playing with [in England and Manchester United]. Wayne Rooney is second greatest goal scorer in the history of England and Michael Owen is sixth.

The career of Owen was usually hampered by injuries, but in 482 club appearances he scored 222 goals and retired at the age of 32.
