Ronaldo Gesture Sparks Suspension Fears

The reaction that Cristiano Ronaldo showed after Al-Nassr was beaten by Al-Hilal 3-1 has provoked new disciplinary issues, making the Portuguese star risk being suspended at an important point of his career before the FIFA world cup in 2026.

Ronaldo, during a Saudi Pro League match on January 12, clearly exhibited his annoyance with a referee ruling and was according to the camera, waving a gesture of being robbed to a match official. The referees reported the incident, and now it is under formal consideration at the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF).

In accordance with the SAFF Disciplinary and Ethics Code, the on-field gestures that are considered to be offensive or damaging to the integrity of the match officials should be classified as a punishable conduct. It is believed that the federation would review video proofs and then make a decision as to whether the action taken is disciplinary.

Ronaldo might be suspended two to four games with a SAR 20,000-SAR 40,000 financial penalty as a penalty in case of a conviction. Such a decision would disqualify him in the rest of the Al-Nassr league matches in January, which would be a blow to the already crumbling title hopes of the club.

Al-Nassr started the season in excellent shape as they were able to win their initial ten matches in league. Nevertheless, in the recent past, they have found themselves seven points behind leaders Al-Hilal, which is putting more pressure on the team and its captain.

It is not the first time that Ronaldo has gotten into trouble in Saudi football. In 2024, he was suspended two matches because of a Super Cup defeat to Al-Hilal because of a supposedly disgraceful conduct on his part. He also had a one-match suspension earlier this season due to an indecent gesture to Al-Shabab supporters after being cheered by them, as a reaction to Lionel Messi references.

As the 2026 world cup is nearing, disciplinary issues might recur, and it would make the end of Ronaldo in the top league challenging with doubts on his behavior on the field and its effects on his legacy.
