Reece James had the ball in the net with a great effort from a distance. But it was (right) ruled out for offside on the initial flick-on from the corner. A second-string Liverpool assault achieved little until the end of the half when Fabinho appeared destined to score. Until Wes Fofana made a crucial block. The second half began similarly to the first, with Kovai squandering a good opportunity.

The rest of the Premier League game was much the same, but with growing aggravation and a lack of fluidity or flow. Neither side appeared likely to score, even though both seemed capable of making a royal shambles defensively.
