Portugal vs England Ends in 1-1 Draw

Following Kika Nazareth’s incredible strike negating Alessia Russo’s opener, England began their Women’s Nations League season with a disappointing 1-1 draw in Portugal.

When the Lionesses started their first game of 2025 with Russo’s goal inside the opening 15 minutes, it appeared to be business as usual; but, their failure to make their dominance count infuriated Sarina Wiegman on the sidelines.

Lauren James – in her first England appearance since April – tried the spectacular numerous times but other than her long range speculative efforts, England hardly looked like extending to their lead. Momentum then changed as Portugal manager Francisco Neto brought Nazareth on just before the hour mark. She soon had her say to the delight of the home audience at a packed out Estadio Municipal de Portimao.

Before curling her equaliser into the top right corner, away from Mary Earps’s outstretched arm, the Barcelona ace routinely had Grace Clinton’s beating and brushed off a challenge from the midfielder.
