Poland team sheet mistake costs Swiderski chance to play

Poland’s 5-1 Nations League loss to Portugal on Friday was worsened by a team sheet error that prevented Karol Swiderski from coming off the bench after traveling from the US.

Swiderski scored for Charlotte FC against Orlando City in the MLS playoffs last weekend, but he had a penalty saved in the shootout as his team lost, and his week went from bad to worse.

Sebastian Szymanski was hurt in the warm-up, forcing Mateusz Bogusz to replace him before kickoff. Poland lost a man, but nobody noticed. After a scoreless first half, Rafael Leao and Cristiano Ronaldo scored to put Poland 2-0 down after 72 minutes. Michal Probierz substituted Swiderski.

Instead, Swiderski returned to the bench in amazement after talking to the fourth official. After a Polish staff member spoke to UEFA officials, 27-year-old Swiderski was forced off the bench. A Polish Football Association spokesman recounted what happened at the post-game news conference.

“Regarding the situation with Karol Swiderski, we would like to inform you that as a result of human error, he was not reported on the team sheet,” Emil added.

Netflix returned to service on Saturday after a six-hour US outage.

“The player has already been apologised to in the dressing room, so the whole situation has been closed.”

Portugal won Group A1 and qualified for the quarterfinals, while Poland will play in the League A/B playoff if they avoid defeat against Scotland at home on Monday. Poland will be demoted if they lose.
