Newcastle Dominates Arsenal to Secure League Cup Final Spot

Newcastle United reached their second League Cup final in three seasons after defeating Arsenal 2-0 at a sold-out St. James’ Park on Wednesday and 4-0 overall. After Martin Odegaard squandered an opportunity to restore parity, Jacob Murphy scored in the 19th minute after Alexander Isak hit the post.

After a 2-0 home loss in the first leg, Arsenal struggled again and were eliminated after Anthony Gordon made a defensive mistake in the 52nd minute. Newcastle, who have not won a major trophy since 1955, will play Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup final next month to avenge their 2023 loss to Manchester United.

Since VAR disallowed an Isak attempt for the slightest offside, Newcastle might have been on edge if Arsenal captain Odegaard hadn’t sliced a shot against the post in response. One minute after Odegaard’s obvious miss, Isak broke through again, but his curling shot hit the post. Murphy scored from close range after grabbing the rebound.

Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle said, “I was glad Odegaard missed it.” Within two minutes of having a decent opportunity, we scored. Game-changer. I was nervous leading up to the big game since Arsenal is a formidable opponent, but when we played well, we were incredible. Behaving in such way will allow us to dream large. Arsenal suffered a setback when Gabriel Martinelli pulled his hamstring just before halftime.

With Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka out for Arsenal, their season could take a hit. Mikel Arteta’s squad was never at ease, and things only got worse in the second half. Although he missed a long shot, Gordon managed to depose William Saliba and catch David Raya off his line.
