Messi awarded MLS MVP after record season

Lionel Messi was awarded MLS MVP on Friday after leading Inter Miami to a record regular season. Miami won its first Supporters Shield as the Argentine superstar helped the club set a record regular season points total.

After scoring 20 goals and 16 assists, the 37-year-old maestro led the league with 36 goals. Despite making only 19 appearances this year due to injuries, Messi was named MVP. After a shocking MLS Cup first-round loss, Miami and Messi’s season ended.

Messi is the 10th South American MVP and fifth from Argentina following Luciano Acosta, Diego Valeri, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, and Christian Gomez. The footballer lamented that Inter Miami lost to Atlanta United in the playoffs and first round.

“I would have liked to receive this award in another situation, being able to play on Saturday,” Messi told Miami Herald.
