Messi awarded MLS MVP after record season

Lionel Messi was awarded MLS MVP on Friday after leading Inter Miami to a record regular season. Miami won its first Supporters Shield as the Argentine superstar helped the club set a record regular season points total.

“Watching you train makes me proud. I enjoy being here daily. I’m glad to be in this rising city and club. […] I enjoy watching you grow. I encourage you to pursue your goals “said.

After scoring 20 goals and 16 assists, the 37-year-old maestro led the league with 36 goals. Despite making only 19 appearances this year due to injuries, Messi was named MVP. After a shocking MLS Cup first-round loss, Miami and Messi’s season ended.

Messi is the 10th South American MVP and fifth from Argentina following Luciano Acosta, Diego Valeri, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, and Christian Gomez. The footballer lamented that Inter Miami lost to Atlanta United in the playoffs and first round.

“I would have liked to receive this award in another situation, being able to play on Saturday,” Messi told Miami Herald.

However, futbol is about conquering oneself daily. We dreamed of winning MLS this year. It was unsuccessful, but we will try again next year. “Fight for your dreams, work hard, and remember that sacrifice and effort have rewards,” he said.

The LA Galaxy will play the New York Red Bulls on Saturday for the MLS Cup title, while Miami was favoured to reach the playoffs.
