Manchester United Edge Lyon in Extra-Time Thriller

From two-goal deficit in the extra time, Manchester United fought to shock Lyon 5-4 in a thrilling Europa League quarter-final, giving their dying season life back here on Thursday at Old Trafford.

United were 4-2 down in extra time after Lyon’s Rayan Cherki’s thunderbolt and goal on penalty from Alexandre Lacazette. But three goals in seven minutes from Harry Maguire’s winner Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, clinched the Red Devils 7-6 on aggregate.

United kicked the second leg fiercely, Manuel Ugarte scored early, and Diogo Dalot doubled the lead in first-half injury time.

Lyon returned from a 2–0 deficit in the 71st minute, though, equalising in seven minutes with goals from Corentin Tolisso and Nicolás Tagliafico, therefore extending the game into extra time at 2–2.

“If you searched for craziness in the dictionary, you most likely would define it as that game. A chaotic game and unbelievable to be on the right side of the outcome, nevertheless for many of our supporters we have produced wonderful memories. We have delighted them and given them enough of material to discuss both positive and bad. Maguire expressed following the game.

Ruben Amorim, United’s manager, believes the club can still make the season memorable following this triumph.

“The sounds of the stadium was the best ever,” Amorim said to TNT Sports. “Some people gather clothes, scarves, but I want to maintain that sound; it’s the best sound in the world. I will be gutted for the individuals who had to leave at 4-2 due to traffic.

“We have time to create something unique of this season; we realise we are failing and merit all the critics. The team was fatigued; 4-2 with one more player; we believe it to be over, but here it is never done. It was a fantastic night.

“You feel the environment; here everything is possible.”

United will play Athletic Club, who reserved their spot in the semi-final following aggregate victory against Rangers 2-0, in the first leg of the clash on May 2 at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao.
