Luis Castro Leaves Al Nassr After Poor Season

After a poor start to the AFC Champions League, Al Nassr fired Portuguese coach Luis Castro. The statement came on September 18, 2024, a day after Al Nassr’s Champions League Elite opener against Iraq’s Al Shorta 1-1 draw. Castro leaves after a year with Cristiano Ronaldo’s team due to pressure and poor performance.

On X, the Riyadh club thanked Castro and his crew for their 14-month service. However, the club did not explain his departure. Castro’s time at Al Nassr has highs and lows. Under his leadership, the squad won the Arab Club Champions Cup last year, a major Asian-African competition. Castro had trouble winning the domestic league and other contests despite this.

Al Nassr was eighth in the Saudi Pro League with five points from their first three matches before he left. These guys have only won one game this season. The team finished second in the league last season, 14 points behind Al Hilal, and lost the Saudi Super Cup final 4-1 to Al Hilal in August.

Since they played without Cristiano Ronaldo, the draw against Al Shorta was disheartening. Ronaldo, who has five UEFA Champions League titles but no major trophy with Al Nassr, was absent from the match due to a viral virus. His absence hurt as the club struggled to break down their opponents’ defense.

Luis Castro, who guided Shakhtar Donetsk to the 2019-20 Ukrainian Premier League title, also managed Vitoria Guimaraes, Porto, and Rio Ave. Like Rudi Garcia, he left Al Nassr in April 2023 after failing to win the league despite Ronaldo’s presence.

Stephano Pioli is a possible Al Nassr head coach candidate, according to domestic media. Pioli, who led AC Milan to the 2022 Serie A title, is available after leaving in May. Al Nassr may consider him to rejuvenate their squad and fulfill their ambitious aims due to his European achievements.

The departure of Luis Castro shows the enormous stakes and pressure top Saudi Pro League football clubs, especially those with Ronaldo, endure. Al Nassr will now hire a new coach to win silverware and restore the club’s domestic and continental standing.
