Liverpool’s 2022 has been a tale of two halves, with the Reds coming within two games of a record quadruple last season and then getting off to a bad start the next season. Liverpool fans will forever remember the 2022–23 season as the time their team came so close to greatness, only to fall short when Manchester City again defeated Jurgen Klopp’s squad in the Premier League title game and Real Madrid defeated the Merseyside giants in the UEFA Champions League final in Paris.

Luis Diaz, who joined the Premier League giants at the beginning of the year, has emerged as one of the greatest players for the Reds, and he is widely considered to be the year’s breakout player. Diaz was brought in from FC Porto in January for a total of £50 million in anticipation of Sadio Mane’s exit in the summer.

But nobody could have guessed that the Colombian international would feel at home at Anfield as quickly as the winger did. After assisting on Takumi Minamino’s first goal for Liverpool and scoring in his second Premier League game, it was evident that Klopp had another talent on his hands, and the 25-year-old was moved to the center of the offense in place of Roberto Firmino.

Diaz added another great accolade to his Reds’ CV by being voted Man of the Match in the FA Cup final against Chelsea, following up on his goal and assisting in a 3-1 Champions League quarter-final triumph against Benfica that sent Liverpool to the final in France. Even though the winger is sidelined until March with a knee injury, his four goals and two assists have been a bright spot for Liverpool in an otherwise forgettable season. The Reds are currently 15 points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal.
