Lewandowski Double Seals Barcelona’s Final Win

La Liga champions Barcelona finished their season with a 3-0 triumph over Athletic Club here at San Mamés on Sunday, Robert Lewansky scored an early double.

With 88 points, Barcelona ended their La Liga run barely four points ahead of Real Madrid. With 76 points, Atletico Madrid came third; Athletic Bilbao and Villarreal came fourth and fifth respectively, guaranteeing berths in the UEFA Champions League for next season.

Barcelona chose to sideline top goalkeepers Wojciech Szczesny and Marc- Andre ter Stegen, giving third-choice keeper Inaki Pena his first start in more than four months.

But it was all Lewkowski, lobbing the ball over the goalkeeper with Fermin Lopez’s assist to start Barcelona in the 14th minute. The lads of Hansi Flick had 100th goal of the season.

To quadruple the lead, the Polish striker added still another three minutes later. He finished second with 27 goals, though, failing to equal Kylian Mbappe’s 31 goals for the La Liga season.

Dani Olmo scored a penalty in the fourth minute of the additional time for the second half to guarantee Barcelona’s win.

Lewandowski, the La Liga winners’ star, gave the season great marks as they also won the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey, thereby completing a domestic triple.

“We had a strategy to win the last game of the season; we performed well in the first half and kept everything under control all through. Almost the ideal season is what we experience here. Let’s now savor the occasion,” Lewandowski added.
