LaLiga Applauds Court Ruling on Barcelona’s Olmo Appeal

LaLiga applauded a court’s Friday ruling that Barcelona’s precautionary registration of Dani Olmo for the rest of the season was denied, meaning the Spain international may not play for the club from Jan. 1. Barcelona signed Olmo in August for 55 million euros ($57.39 million), but LaLiga’s pay cap prevented the club from registering him for more than half the season.

Barca was able to register Olmo after months of injuries kept first-team players out, allowing them to use some of their earnings. Olmo’s four-month authorization expires at the end of the month, and Barcelona’s Commercial Court number 10 denied the club’s plea to provisionally register him.

“LaLiga has today learned of the ruling… rejecting the request for the provisional registration of Dani Olmo until June 30, 2025, on the grounds that none of the necessary conditions for the adoption of an interim measure have been met,” said.

“The ruling also stresses that: ‘The purpose of allowing additional spending is so that a long-term injury does not weaken the team’s competitiveness, not to use a long-term injury to allow the registration of players whose salaries exceed the limit, which is what FC Barcelona is attempting’.”

Barcelona has relied on Olmo, who led Spain to European Championship triumph earlier this year. Barca are third in LaLiga, three points behind Atletico Madrid. LaLiga said its Budget Validation Body first decided not to register Olmo.

It was affirmed three times by its Financial Fair Play Committee, Social Appeals Committee, and UEFA Second Instance Licensing Committee of the Spanish Football Federation.

Barca are appealing to the magistrate court on Monday, a day before the deadline, according to Spanish media.
