La Liga had been given permission to use a semi-automatic offside system beginning with this season in its league, but technical difficulties have forced a postponement. According to Diario AS, La Liga and the RFEF planned to roll out the technology in time for the 11th of August kickoff of the new Spanish football season. Both organizations were eager to have it implemented for LaLiga EA Sports and LaLiga Hypermotion after seeing its success during the 2022 World Cup and the Spanish Super Cup.
La liga delayed semi-automatic offside until 2024-25
Mediapro failed a complaint, which has yet to be resolved after the RFEF attempted to generate interest in April from any company ready to supply the service for Spanish football. The new deadline of August 11 means the system may now be implemented before the 2024-25 season begins.
As for the VAR provider, Hawk-Eye will continue to serve this season. The semi-automatic offside method is widely expected to increase the effectiveness of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in football, a belief shared. However, for the time being, Spanish football will have to do without it.
