Jason Wilcox Shines as Malacia Joins PSV

Tyrell Malacia is excited to be “finally playing good football again” after joining PSV Eindhoven in one of Manchester United’s two beat-the-deadline transactions. Bruno Fernandes sent him a note.

Manchester United signed the Dutch full-back from Feyenoord for €15m (£13m, $16.2m) to start the Erik ten Hag era. Despite showing flashes of his brilliance in a first season that delivered 39 games across all competitions, the player’s stay at Old Trafford was cut short by a major knee injury and surgery complications. After that, he only made eight more Red Devils appearances, all under new manager Ruben Amorim.

After United purchased Patrick Dorgu from Lecce for €35m (£29.3m, $36.6m) at the weekend, the player was going to leave for the Eredivisie champions till the end of the season.

In his first club interview, Malacia appeared to brutally disrespect the Red Devils.

I’m glad to be here. Returning to good football, Malacia told PSV’s website. “After a long injury, I am fit and know my time will come.

“Every tough period has positives, and in this case I’ve become stronger physically and mentally. I am more patient, mature, and know my body better. Let’s pop and win some PSV prizes.”

United announced the sale of Under-21s midfielder Ruben Curley to Stoke and Malacia’s first loan arrangement.

In Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s quest to cut United’s spending, Malacia’s move, secured by Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada, will be welcomed. United also have an option to sign the full-back in a permanent €9.6m (£8m, $10m) deal to sign him permanently this summer and cover the player’s £80,000 a week contract. PSV offered United a 30% sell-on clause, allowing them to recoup their investment if the player leaves.
