On Tuesday night, Antoine Griezmann inscribed his name on the books of Atletiko Madrid history when he scored the 200th goal of his career at the club in a resounding 5-1 result against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. Before the halftime, the 37 year old French man scored, cashing in on an assist by Julian Alvarez to make it another vintage performance.
The key emotional scene saw Griezmann lifting a personalized jersey on which it was printed 200 and his nickname Grizi with a roarous ovation amongst the home audience. His second goal attempt would be cancelled in the 67th minute due to his handball, but the forward still received a standing ovation upon replacement.
This achievement is also an addition to his illustrious career with Atletiko where he had previously become the all-time top scorer in the club by passing the record of 137 goals set by Luis Aragones. This consistency of a decade has established him as the heart of soul of Diego Simeone.
Griezmann added after the game: I am pleased, and I am very proud. This is a reward to the years of hard work with the team but it was not that easy. His modesty and hardworking spirit still resonates with fans and other players.
Atletico, who have been in great shape, defeats city rivals only the previous weekend, wins at a very opportune moment. Griezmann stressed the power of maintaining the momentum: The team has been in good health. We have to continue along this line.
To further celebrate the festivities, Atletiko announced that Griezmann has agreed to a contract extension through June 2027. Thus, their project will continue to rely on the veteran striker’s leadership and attacking instinct. Griezmann still inspires the new generation of Rojiblancos with his scoring touch and experience.
