Gabriel Doubtful Ahead North London Derby

Arsenal are on the eve of a highly hyped Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, with a notable defensive dilemma to solve after centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes suffered an injury to his right thigh whilst on international duty with Brazil. The injury was sustained when the 27-year-old was in Brazil, as he defeated Senegal 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium, where he was forced to leave the field in the 64th minute due to apparent discomfort.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) issued a statement that Gabriel underwent a follow-up medical examination and imaging tests, which showed a muscle injury in his right thigh. The Arsenal medical personnel must now expect to make their own judgment when he returns to London, to see whether he is available to play in Sunday’s derby match and play a part in defence, where it is bound to make a difference.

Since 2020, Gabriel has become one of Arsenal’s most effective and powerful defenders. He is now a proven performer, having become the only centre-back in the Premier League since 2020 to have 20 goal contributions (both defensively and as an aerial threat during set pieces).

This was another season in which his significance increased, as he featured in all 11 Premier League games, helping Arsenal concede only five goals —the best defensive statistic to date.

Gabriel also has significant accomplishments in other areas of his career, beyond Arsenal. He won the English Community Shield in 2023 and had previously won titles in Croatia, having led Dinamo Zagreb to the league and cup double in the 2017-18 season. He scored his first career brace in the colours of Arsenal in January 2024, against Crystal Palace, and made 150 appearances a month later.
