Former Wales Star Joey Jones Passes Away

Following a period of sickness, Joey Jones, a former defender for Wales, Liverpool, and Wrexham, passed away at the age of 70, according to foreign media on Tuesday.

Jones, a left-back, has played for Chelsea, Liverpool, Huddersfield Town, and Wrexham. He has also earned 72 caps for his nation. When Mickey Thomas wrote about losing his best friend, he said that his memories would always be there.

“My soulmate and best friend, Sir Joey, passed away this morning. Our memories will always be cherished,” Thomas wrote on his X account.

“My heart is broken today. RIP, Sir Joey. I love you. Janice and the entire family have my deepest sympathies.

John Aldridge, a former striker for Liverpool, also praised him, calling him an inspiration and a wonderful person. According to Aldridge, “More sad news folks, Joey Jones passed away last night,”

“What a wonderful character and inspirational full-back who gave his all for all the teams he played for and in a red shirt!

“Joey’s family is in our prayers! I consider myself fortunate to have met him numerous times. RIP, excellent man. YNWA [You’ll Never Walk Alone].

“Everyone in the club felt the pain of losing a legend,” said Noel Mooney, chief executive of the Football Association of Wales (FAW).

“When the @Wrexham_AFC @Cymru icon Joey Jones passed away, everyone in Welsh football was saddened. Many people love it. Mooney said, “Cwsg mewn hedd (rest in peace) Joey.”

It is important to note that following the Reds’ triumph over Borussia Monchengladbach in Rome in 1977, he became the first Welshman to win the European Cup.
