FIFA Imposes Ban on Pakistan Football Federation

Once more, FIFA has suspended the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) following PFF conference rejection of the FIFA suggested constitutional reforms.

An announcement by FIFA states that the PFF has been suspended with immediate effect because of its inability to adopt a revision of the PFF Constitution that would guarantee really fair and democratic elections and so satisfy its obligations as prescribed by FIFA as part of the continuous normalisation process of PFF.

“The suspension will only be lifted subject to the PFF Congress approving the version of the PFF Constitution presented by FIFA and the AFC,” stated the statement.

The PFF had been advised by FIFA and AFC to introduce changes to its current constitution. The suggested changes were to be included clauses pertaining to the voting procedure. Still, the PFF elected congress had turned down those changes.

The PFF has suspended members before this

Due to excessive third-party intervention, a breach of FIFA’s policies, FIFA suspended the federation in April 2021 June 2022 saw the lifting of the ban following FIFA’s confirmation that the PFF’s Normalisation Committee was running its finances and had complete control over the federation’s grounds.

Notwithstanding these initiatives, problems have not gone away. FIFA has been advocating constitutional changes inside the PFF in order to enable fair elections and appropriate government in recent years. The PFF Congress has been slow to approve these reforms, though, which results in the present suspension.

The suspension forbids Pakistan’s teams from competing internationally until the matter is settled, therefore depriving the PFF of any aid from the FIFA.

Earlier today, Chairman Haroon Malik of PFF Normalisation Committee warned that the world football organisation may “conditionally” suspend Pakistan due of the standoff between FIFA and PFF’s newly elected congress.

The chairman reported the progress while updating the standing committee on Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC). This will, he warned, cause Pakistan to at least lose its international involvement and stop-off of FIFA’s financial support to PFF.

“To bring the PFF Constitution into accordance with international norms, FIFA wants some changes done to it. Most of the recently elected PFF Congress members have not agreed to FIFA’s recommendations,” Malik stated in reference to recent initiatives.

He also briefed the standing committee on the PFF election process from the district level forward and advised that all elections have been finished and the chosen Congress members will supervise the next stage.

Malik also underlined that the PFF got to the second round and took part in the 2023 Olympic qualifications for the first time. The committee valued national federation efforts in advancing football at the Olympic level.
