Felix from Atletico joins Chelsea on seven-year contract

On Wednesday, Chelsea confirmed an agreement that will see Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix join the Blues for seven years. According to English media, Chelsea paid 46 million pounds ($59.95 million) to bring the 24-year-old back to Stamford Bridge.

On loan to Chelsea during the 2022-23 season, in a six-month stint with the team, Felix turned out four goals in 20 showings. Further stunning with the Catalans last season, he scored on 10 occasions in 44 games. The forward was 23 and signed in 2019 by Atletico Madrid from Benfica with a club record 126 million euros—about $140 million. He became really instrumental to the success of the team, Atletico, particularly its 2021 LaLiga title win, scoring 34 goals in 131 matches for the club.

As he talked about his journey, Felix expressed finding a permanent club after loans at Chelsea and Barcelona. “Chelsea feels like the right place for me,” he said. “I enjoyed my time here and, despite the challenges, I’m excited to be back.

This is a great place for me to really take off.” Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca also talked about how versatile Felix is: “Joao is a player who gives versatility; the player can play in any position—whether as a central striker, playing inside, or out wide.”

Chelsea face a Europa Conference League playoff against Swiss side Servette on Thursday, and then turn their focus to Sunday’s Premier League battle with Wolverhampton Wanderers this weekend.
