Did Spain Defeat Switzerland in the Women’s Euro Quarterfinals?

Spain won a spot in the UEFA Women’s Euro semi-final with a strong 2-0 win over Switzerland at the Wankdorf Stadium on Friday. Athenea del Castillo and Claudia Pina scored the goals.

For more than an hour, Switzerland was able to keep Spain from scoring by being disciplined in defence and hunting for chances to attack. But Spain slowly gained control of the game, controlling possession and making chances until they finally got the goal they had been looking for.

Aitana Bonmatí did something amazing in the 66th minute to break through the Swiss defence. She used her creativity to do a rabona pass to Athenea del Castillo, who had no trouble getting the ball past Swiss custodian Livia Peng to make it 1-0.

Claudia Pina scored again for Spain just five minutes later, making the score 2–0. The forward got the ball on the edge of the box and curled a great shot into the top corner, leaving Peng frozen in place and starting celebrations among the Spanish players and spectators.

Athenea was very happy with both the result and the team’s performance after the game. She especially praised the support they had from the fans.

“We are very happy to have made it to the semifinals.” The group did everything they could. She said, “The atmosphere was amazing, and I hope it can happen again.”

“The team made a lot of chances, but we didn’t take advantage of them. We was stranded for a while, but we were able to win in the end.

The game got even more exciting when Spain’s Alexia Putellas missed a late penalty kick and Switzerland’s Noelle Maritz was sent off with a straight red card in stoppage time for a dangerous challenge.
