Dembele Hands PSG First-Leg Lead Over Arsenal in UCL

On Tuesday, Ousmane Dembele’s early goal gave Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) a 1-0 win over Arsenal in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinal at the Emirates Stadium. In the fourth minute, the French forward scored a magnificent shot off a Khvicha Kvaratskhelia pass to give PSG the lead heading into the return leg.

Luis Enrique’s team had more possession and chances than their hosts in the first half. They nearly increased their lead, but Arsenal custodian David Raya saved to keep them in the game.

Arsenal was kept at away by PSG custodian Gianluigi Donnarumma, who made several vital saves. Visitors tactically neutralised Bukayo Saka, limiting his effect throughout the contest.

Donnarumma, who had saved penalties against Liverpool and won the match against Aston Villa, continued his good form on the big stage.

“It was a great night for the group,” remarked Vitinha of PSG. We had the ball most of the time. We adjusted to different match phases in attack and defence.”

Arsenal rallied after a difficult start and sought an equaliser. Mikel Merino thought he had equalised, but his goal was disallowed.

The defeat disappointed Arsenal, who are in their first Champions League quarterfinal since 2009. However, custodian David Raya is optimistic.

“We proved we can compete with any squad in the 25th minute. This season has shown we can win away from home, therefore we’ll head to Paris next week to win “Raya remarked.

The pivotal second leg at Parc des Princes in Paris on Thursday, May 8, will determine a Champions League final spot.
