Croatia Seal 2026 World Cup Qualification

Officially, Croatia secured their spot to the 2026 FIFA World Cup by giving an impressive comeback to beat the Faroe Islands 31 on Friday evening at HNK Rijeka Stadium. The outcome mathematically confirmed the qualification of Croatia who had one more game left in their group campaign, but at the same time crushed the very small hopes of Faroe Island who had any desire to advance further.

It took an early shock in the game when Geza David Turi, the midfielder of the Grimsby Town club, sent the visitors into the lead with a sharp counter-stroke which witnessed his effort bouncing off the Croatian goalkeeper. The amazingly surprising opener briefly stunned the supporters of the home side, and there was the chance of a historic surprise.

Nevertheless, Croatia did not give up and acted calmly. Only 7 minutes later, the defender Josko Gvardiol, a forward-moving ball carrier who can finish with great accuracy, scored a goal that returned the tie. The draw made Croatia revive its pace and they began to control possession and pace gradually.

The second half proved decisive with Petar Musa returning to the national squad after a long absence scoring in the calmest way possible to make the turnaround complete. The domination of Croatia grew and triumph was achieved with a goal by Nikola Vlasic, who headed a perfect cross by one of his own teammate Ivan Perisic, a perfect and full-fledged comeback.

After the game, Gvardiol was proud of the victory and insisted on the need to continue winning pace until the world championship next summer as he said: Our goal was met even a game early. We will go to Montenegro easy, however, time is of the essence.

Sportsmanship was exhibited by the Faroe Islands manager Eydun Klakstein who congratulated Croatia and wished them well noting that smaller football countries tended to find inspiration in each other by international competition.

Croatia currently feel a lot more content as they are now on top of the group by six points above Czech Republic who are in a play-off runway. In the meantime, the Faroes Islands are over with their campaign and cannot progress mathematically. The outcome strengthens the position of Croatia as the stable and steady international power.
